With the new year here and many people looking to make resolutions to improve their health, one of the most popular ways to achieve this goal is by regular exercise. But what you may not realize is that in addition to benefiting your physical and mental fitness, working out can also improve your gum health, too. Here’s how!
The Connection Between Oral and Overall Health
A recent study in the Journal of Dentistry found that regular exercise can lower your risk of developing periodontal (gum) disease by 54 percent. Yet another, The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey discovered that people who exercise three times a week or less have a 33 percent lower risk of developing it!
BMI and Oral Health
Another study in the Journal of Periodontology found a connection between your Body Mass Index (BMI) and oral health. According to the data, people who maintain a healthy body weight and get the recommended amount of exercise had a 40 percent lower risk of periodontal disease than those who do not.
How Much Exercise Do I Need?
The amount of exercise for each person varies depending on your age; however, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends that most adults in good health aim for about 150 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous cardiovascular exercise each week.
Other Ways to Protect Your Gums
In addition to adapting an exercise routine, there are several other important ways to protect your gums from periodontal disease. These include:
- Brush your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste.
- Floss daily.
- Visit your dentist twice a year for your regular, preventive exams and cleanings.
Remember, the new year is an excellent time to renew your commitment to your health and well-being, and beginning an exercise routine is an excellent way to keep your body and mouth in great shape. To learn more about how working out can benefit you, and to help create a safe routine, speak to your physician. To protect your teeth and gums, visit your dentist to keep smiling in 2026!
