As their name suggests, metal free restorations are fillings, crowns, bridges, and other types of dental restorations that don’t contain any metal. In the past, these restorations were typically crafted out of amalgam, which is a mixture of metals like silver, tin, and nickel. On the other hand, metal free restorations are made of dental porcelain, ceramic, or composite resin. These materials are tooth-colored and resemble the appearance of natural tooth enamel. Metal free restorations can be shaded to match the color of nearby teeth to blend in seamlessly with the rest of the smile.

The process for getting a metal free restoration will depend on the type of restoration you need. However, it will generally require a process similar to that of placing the traditional type of that restoration. First, your tooth (or teeth) will need to be prepared. Depending on the nature of your situation, this could involve Dr. Petulla or Dr. Kazemi removing decayed tissue from a cavity, reshaping a damaged tooth, or performing root canal therapy.

If you’re receiving a filling, we’ll simply fill in the cavity with a tooth-colored composite resin, harden it into place with a special light, and polish it so that it looks like a natural part of your tooth. If you need a crown or bridge, we’ll take impressions of your tooth/teeth after preparation, send that information to a local dental laboratory, and place a temporary restoration. In about two weeks, you’ll return to our office to have your custom-made metal free crown or bridge bonded permanently into place.
