Dentist in Marlton at Thanksgiving dinner.Thanksgiving is an exciting time of the year as you gather with loved ones to share tasty meals. You’ll be surrounded by a variety of foods, which can be difficult to resist. If you aren’t careful, the holidays can leave a lasting mark on more than just your waistline. Here are 4 delicious dishes your dentist in Marlton recommends you avoid, so you don’t put your smile on the chopping block.

1. Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce is a staple for many Thanksgiving tables. Its tart taste perfectly complements a well-roasted turkey. Unfortunately, canned cranberry sauce has about 121 grams of sugar. Not to mention, it doesn’t have any fiber or protein. The high sugar content of the sauce can cause bad bacteria in your mouth to skyrocket, increasing your risk of tooth decay.

As an alternative to canned cranberry sauce, choose fresh berries. This allows you to have better control over the amount of sugar you’re consuming. Don’t forget to rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth after your meal to prevent the cranberries from staining your enamel.

2. Stuffing

Stuffing is a Thanksgiving favorite for many people, but did you know it can harm your teeth? Bread contains starches, which contribute to cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth. Starches cling to your teeth, slowly eroding your enamel. In addition, bread doesn’t have a strong nutritional value. Instead of traditional stuffing, choose a recipe that uses beans as a base. You’ll increase your fiber intake while keeping your teeth healthy.

3. Fruit Cake

You might think fruit cake is a healthy choice during the holidays; however, it can damage your enamel. Dried fruits are sticky, allowing them to linger on your teeth. The residue can get trapped in the crevasses of your molars, heightening your risk of tooth decay. It’s best to eat fresh fruit when possible. If you need a sweet treat, consider a fresh fruit crumble, which has less sugar so you can maintain a healthy smile.

4. Sweet Potato Casserole

Sweet potato casserole is a savory dish found on many tables throughout the country. Many people add sugar or marshmallows to the casserole, which are bad for your teeth. If you’re going to make sweet potatoes for dinner, it’s best they aren’t loaded with sugar to prevent damaging your enamel.

Invest in a Healthy Smile

Besides side dishes, there will be many yummy treats for dessert. If you can’t ignore your sweet tooth, be sure to brush your teeth well after eating. If you can’t get to your toothbrush, rinse your mouth to cleanse your teeth to help prevent any unexpected news next time you visit your family dentist.
